5 Cities That Never Have Sunlight in December

December 21 is winter solstice; many cities in the northern hemisphere will have their shortest days or no daylight, and their longest nights around this time. We researched to find cities with nights lasting for up to 2 months, and all of these cities are all permanently inhabited by humans.

Most of Greenland

We didn’t have to find a particular city in Greenland to pick, as many of the cities of this northern country have no sun rise for many days in December and January.

Alert, Canada

Alert, Nunavut is considered the northernmost inhabited community on earth and they will have no sun rise today and for quite some time into winter.

Norilsk, Siberia

Norilsk is the northernmost city in the world with continuous night of up to 6 weeks every year. It is also one of the most polluted cities in the world owing to mining, smelting and metallurgy industries.

Svalbard, Norway

Svalbard is a Norwegian archipelago between mainland Norway and the North Pole with around 2,500 people inhabiting the islands. It is considered an Artic fairy tale, complete with Northern Lights in winter and the ‘midnight sun’ all through summer.

Barrow or Utqiaġvik, USA

It is the 11th northernmost public community in the world and the northernmost city in the United States. The sun usually sets in November every year, not to rise again until late January, around 65 days later.
